How to get equipped for ice fishing

How to Gear Up for Ice Fishing

Rooted in a tradition passed down from the First Nations, ice fishing is an exceptional winter activity that’s accessible to anyone looking to discover new ways to enjoy the cold season. You’ve always wanted to try it but weren’t sure where to start? Here are a few tips to help you get started.

First step: drilling through the ice

There are two types of ice augers: powered and manual.

The first option is more expensive, but much faster and more efficient, and it also allows you to drill larger holes. The second option is more affordable, but requires a bit more physical effort, which isn’t always unpleasant in freezing weather!

Be careful, as ice auger blades are extremely sharp. Also make sure you have an ice skimmer to keep your holes clear.

What should you use to fish?

Use an ice fishing rod and reel combo, which is smaller and lighter than standard setups. For excellent value, our buyers recommend the Zebco Roam Ice (available here). This model combines a reliable reel with a durable fiberglass rod, delivering strength and performance without overspending.

Rod holders are also very useful: they free up your hands while you wait for a bite.

Otherwise, there’s always the traditional tip-up, a simple system that’s secured in the ice next to a hole, with a line suspended into the water. Affordable and effective, tip-ups can be set up in multiples to increase your chances of catching fish.

Keep in mind that fish bite less aggressively when temperatures drop. Stay alert for even the slightest movement of the rod so you can set the hook at the right time.

Lures and bait

Just like in summer, many types of lures and bait work well for ice fishing. Natural bait is a safe choice for beginners, especially if you’re targeting trout.

For sunfish, perch, or walleye, choose jigging lures (or jigs), which you’ll animate with small vertical movements to attract the fish’s attention. Berkley and Rapala offer a wide range of colorful models that can make all the difference.

Attractants are also very useful in winter. BOOST products from CrushCity (see here) release a strong, long-lasting scent that draws fish in from far away. Don’t hesitate to experiment, that’s part of the fun of fishing too!

Lines and sinkers

If you’re fishing with a rod, choose a line designed specifically for cold water, as it’s more flexible and more resistant.

For tip-ups, choose a braided line made for ice fishing, such as the one from Compac (see the product).

When it comes to sinkers, some brands now offer eco-friendly options. 74th Element makes tungsten models, a non-toxic material that is denser than lead, while Compac offers steel alternatives.

A shelter for added comfort

Portable shelters protect you from wind and cold, and can be set up anywhere on the body of water. Once your shelter is assembled, add a few camping chairs, a heater, and a cooler, and you’re ready for a perfect day!

Safety first

Before heading out, check ice conditions and verify its thickness. When you arrive, drill a hole to make sure the ice is at least 4 inches thick.

An inflatable flotation collar is also an excellent addition to your safety gear. More suitable than a life jacket, it gives you greater freedom of movement despite thick winter clothing.

Finally, bring ice picks. Connected by a cord worn around the neck, they take up very little space and can literally save your life if you fall into the water.

How to dress

Ice fishing requires very little movement, so you need to dress warmly. Layer several pieces of clothing to retain heat and wick away moisture. A thick coat, insulated pants, and waterproof boots are essential. Sorel, Baffin, and Acton offer excellent options.

Complete your outfit with a toque, a scarf or neck gaiter, and a balaclava for extremely cold days. Gloves or mittens with a GORETEX membrane keep your hands dry, and heated clothing, popular among snowmobilers, can make your experience even more comfortable.

Ice fishing is more than just a type of sport fishing: it’s a true winter tradition, deeply rooted in our northern culture, with its huts and tip-ups that the cold seems to mysteriously bring to life across frozen bodies of water.

Each time, it’s the signal that an adventure is about to begin, both intriguing and familiar, inviting people to gather and discover. We encourage you to bring together your family and friends and try this activity, which we are convinced will create unforgettable moments!
