In Quebec, the moose hunting licence is only valid for one provincial game hunting area. Each of these provincial game hunting areas is identified in the main hunting rules summary, which is the annual government brochure that is handed to you when you purchase your licence from any of the 1800 authorized dealers.
If you wish to hunt moose during the open gun, crossbow and bow season, you must purchase your hunting licence before midnight on the day before the open season, for the area of your choice.
For example: even if moose hunting does not end until October 13 in provincial area No. 19 South (Côte-Nord), you can no longer buy licences to hunt there at that time, because the hunting season started on September 13 and you would have had to buy your moose hunting licence for that area before midnight on September 12.
You still have the opportunity to hunt moose in other provincial areas (refer to the table on page 29 of the above summary). At that time, moose hunting season is not open everywhere in the province.
You can purchase a moose hunting licence at any time, provided you participate in regulated and controlled moose hunting in a government wildlife area, in the territory of an outfitter with exclusive hunting rights, or in a limited access sector of a ZEC (in a ZEC that has divided its territory into sectors and that does not allow to move from one sector to the other to hunt moose).
What is an area licence transfer? First, it is important to note that area transfers are not allowed for hunters who have already purchased their licence. There are, however, exceptions. You can transfer your area licence (it costs $5.70, plus taxes) to participate in regulated hunting in a government wildlife reserve, on the territory of an outfitter with exclusive hunting rights, or in a limited access sector of a ZEC. To be eligible for such a transfer, you must not have hunted moose in any of the three types of territories mentioned above. You can only do one transfer per year.
If, after having accomplished the transfer, you do not achieve the expected hunting success (in a wildlife reserve, an outfitter with exclusive hunting rights or in a limited access sector of the ZEC of the second chosen provincial area), you may continue to hunt moose until the end of the season in that second area.
If you transfer your area licence, you must carry your initial hunting licence and the one authorizing you to hunt in the second area.
