Wet Fly (Soft Hackle) : Tying Guide and Tips

By Magasin Latulippe

The Soft Hackle Type Wet Fly is a must-have pattern for trout fly fishing. Easy to tie and highly effective, it perfectly imitates drowned or emerging insects. Don’t hesitate to experiment with the colors of the three key components to match the hatch and adapt to fishing conditions:

-The floss silk body
-The tinsel ribbing
-The mallard flank hackle

Materials for the Soft Hackle Wet Fly

Detailed Tying Steps

1. Hook Preparation

Secure the hook in the vise and wrap the tying thread down to the hook bend to create an even base.

2. Tinsel Placement

Tie in the oval tinsel along the hook shank, leaving the tag end hanging toward the rear.

3. Forming the Body

Attach the floss silk at the hook bend and wrap it forward to form a smooth, even body. Then counter-wrap the tinsel forward in 5–6 turns and secure it firmly.

4. Soft Hackle Collar

Tie in the mallard flank feather by the tip just behind the eye. Wrap it to form a soft, mobile collar — a pair of hackle pliers can help with this step.

5. Finishing

Complete the fly with a whip finish and apply a small drop of head cement or varnish for durability.
