Browning BLR Rifle

By Steeve Gosselin

Most lever-action rifles available on the market are equipped with a tubular magazine, thus limiting the user to round cartridges. This limitation inevitably comes at the expense of precision. Recently, Browning has changed the rules of the game with its BRL rifle, which can be used with modern cartridges. Let's take a closer look.

The credit for the design goes to Karl R. Lewis and production began in 1969 in factories of the Fabrique nationale de Belgique. A few years later, production was moved to Miroku, Japan. The BLR rifle has undergone very few changes since it was first introduced. The original model was equipped with extended magazines, which were replaced by a flush-mounted magazine. In 1991, the use of long-action calibres increased its versatility. In 1995, the BLR Lightweight made its entry in the market. The steel mechanism's receiver was replaced by an aluminum receiver, which significantly reduced its weight. It is equipped with a detachable magazine, making it suitable to be used with a wide range of calibres.

The trigger system follows the lever and prevents fingers from getting pinched while pressing. The hammer can safely be placed in a half-cock position. The system is equipped with a multi-lug rotating bolt, providing resistance when locked. Its action allows the use of Magnum calibre cartridges.

Whatever the version, Browning BLR is a reliable, precise and easy to use lever-action rifle. It has the advantage of being compact, which makes it popular with ground-hunting enthusiasts.
